Does Free taste best?

Last night as I was pulling out a 2 pound package of fresh Cod from the fridge to begin making dinner, Amy casually looked over at me from the kitchen table where she,  her coffee and mamouth bible of NY Times crossword puzzles have been making significant time together of late.

She smiled at me which caused me to take note... she doesn't usually smile at me unless it involves favor-asking, money expenditures or some other backhanded activity.  I asked why the smile and quickly her smile turned to a clown-like, full-face smile/laugh.

I was extremely worried.

She just sat there like some moronic Emmett Kelly minus the male plumbing and makeup.  I continued making dinner.

Finally about halfway through the process of broiling the Cod, sauteing fresh spinach with fresh garlic, dried cranberries & roasted walnuts and simmering some nice organic wild rice she started in with a kind of Germanic, Oktoberfest-beer hall-belly laugh...

Okay, okay... what gives?!

Finally she looks at me and outs the following, "How's it feel to be a thief?"

What?  Huh?  Thief?

What's that mean?

Still laughing she says that the Cod is stolen and that I am making a dinner comprised of stolen merchandise... that I could be arrested and criminally charged for this very meal.

I am very confused.

Still laughing, she explains that when her and Chloe were shopping the day before, she got the Cod from the fish counter and placed it in the cart.  Later, when going through the checkout lane, Chloe, who was sitting in the foldout seat in the cart, must have taken the fish and tucked it in her purse because the next time she (Amy) saw the Cod was when she was trying to find her cell phone in the car on the way home from the grocery store.

So like some kind of family crime ring... our 5 year old daughter took $12.89 worth of fresh Cod, tucked it into her mommy's purse, mommy finds it on the way home, mommy puts it in the fridge and daddy pulls it out later to make for dinner.

It all sounds so Organized & Criminal.

I must say, I don't know if it was knowing the origins of the Cod beforehand or not, and while I've broiled and consumed much Cod in my day...

last nights was absolutely smokin'!   Fresh, light, extremely good flavor & very moist.
